A custom domain can preserve your public address when you change email providers. You must control the domain and its DNS records. Hosting mail does not automatically include buying or renewing the domain.
Compare mailbox hosting with forwarding-only services. Check user limits, aliases, catch-all and outbound authentication. A free provider account is not evidence that its domain plan is free.
Mailbox hosting stores mail in a provider-managed inbox. Forwarding delivers it to a mailbox you already have; replies and new outbound messages may have different limits. Self-hosted software gives you operational responsibility and can require a server, mail ports and maintenance.
You need control of the domain and its DNS records. Compare actual billing periods, user or account basis, minimum quantities, promotions and regional restrictions. Free hosting does not pay domain renewal; free self-hosted software does not pay infrastructure costs.
Confirm new outbound mail separately from forwarding and replies. If you need a mail client, check both IMAP and SMTP and any bridge or app-password requirements. Catch-all receives otherwise unmatched addresses on your domain; provider subdomain wildcards are different. Follow the provider’s DNS and sending-authentication instructions.

Do not assume so. Owning and renewing a domain is a separate requirement unless a documented offer explicitly includes it. Check regional, promotional and minimum-account conditions alongside the quoted price.
No. Forwarding needs a destination mailbox. A domain address can receive through forwarding while SMTP sending or starting a new conversation is paid, separately configured or unavailable.
No. It routes mail for unmatched addresses to a configured destination. It does not create separate users, storage or sending identities, and spam volume may increase. Check the plan’s domain and catch-all conditions.
Controlling the domain allows you to recreate addresses with a compatible provider and change DNS. Messages, aliases, catch-all and sending authentication need separate migration or setup; changing DNS alone does not move stored mail.
